Neck pain is major cause of clinic visits. It affects both men and women in almost equal proportions. The pain may be described as being acute or chronic depending on the duration. Most cases are caused by problems affecting connective tissues in the neck including the bones, the ligaments, muscles and tendons. There are several things on neck pain Conroe residents need to know if suffering from this problem.

Strains are the commonest cause of this problem. Many of them however resolve with very little or no treatment at all. Several self-made remedies can be used to provide comfort and wait for the symptoms to abate within one to two days. Cold compressions are one of the most commonly used home therapies. They work by reducing the inflammation associated with the injury which effectively helps reduce the perception of pain.

Another type of therapy that is equally as effective is the use of hot compressions. The compressions work by enhancing the flow of blood and nutrients to the injured site which in turn helps with the healing process. To augment the hot and cold compressions, over the counter analgesic agents such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) help to relieve the symptoms even as healing takes place. Massage therapy is another option that can be considered under this category.

If the home remedies fail to relieve the symptoms then consider seeing a doctor for a more comprehensive diagnosis. The doctor usually takes a clinical history and performs a physical examination. In the history, the interest is to establish the main characteristics of your symptoms such as the duration, the timing, the intensity and the exact site. An examination seeks to establish the source of the problem.

In some cases, the pain may be associated with other symptoms such as visual blurriness, headache, arm numbness, and so on. Some of these symptoms suggest involvement of the central nervous system in which case monitoring is required. If there is concurrent low back ache, ankylosing spondylitis should be ruled out.

Radiographic images are some of the most important investigations that are carried out. They include plain radiographs, CT Scans and MRIs. The radiographs and the CT scan are most useful in evaluating the bony skeleton while the MRI are most suited for the soft tissues. In the case of simple strains, lesions may not be seen on these images. Other investigations will be guided by the findings on the physical examination.

This condition is largely preventable by avoiding the aggravating factors. In the event that these factors cannot be avoided, there is a need to engage in strengthening exercises regularly and to use protective gear when need be. Those at the greatest risk include athletes who are involved in contact sports such as rugby, football and martial arts.

Neck pain is caused by many factors that include trauma, degenerative conditions and infections. The symptoms vary in duration and severity depending on the cause. Most can be managed with ease at home using easily available therapies. However, there are a number that are very serious as to require evaluation of an expert.
